When he hears a smoky golden voice behind him, he s
initially certain it s just memory. Then he turns to see Jake
striding from the wings, microphone to his lips and stunning in a
white button-down shirt and black slacks and those eyes, God,
those eyes. Their voices fly together for a moment, even
stronger than in the rehearsals.
 So promise me 
Then Cole s voice stutters and dies in his throat, leaving
Jake to sing the last verse directly to him. Jake s eyes never
leave his.
 I had to go,
But I ll be back soon.
So please,
Wait for me.
Just promise me
You ll wait for me.
The crowd erupts in applause.
Jake finally reaches him, and before he can stop himself,
Cole is pulling Jake into a tight hug. He does manage to restrain
himself from going any further in front of the crowd, although his
arm remains around the other man s shoulders as he turns to the
crowd.  Jake Walker, everyone! He grins uncontrollably as they
scream again.
Jake grins blindingly at the crowd, bowing playfully before
leaning over to whisper in Cole s ear.  Sorry I m late.

 Not a problem, Cole murmurs back, squeezing Jake s
shoulder tightly and motioning with his free hand for the band to
start the song they had planned as an encore performance.
 You re here now.
Jake smiles in agreement; then, as the music sweeps up
from behind them, they fall into the music and the dance and the
light and the applause as though this has always been their
second life, stripping the disguise to show the truth underneath.
And, with Cole and Jake together, voices swooping and
contrasting and harmonizing, the music becomes what it always
should have been.
